Doumbia's Swiss Switch

Written by Newcastle Utd

Former Newcastle striker Seydou Doumbia will spend next season in the Swiss Super League after agreeing a loan move

By Dan King - Newcastle United Digital Editor

Former Newcastle striker Seydou Doumbia has joined FC Basel from Roma on a season-long loan.

The Ivory Coast international, 28, made three substitute appearances for the Magpies last season after joining on loan in February.

However, he failed to score and fell down the pecking order when Rafa Benitez replaced Steve McClaren as manager.

FC Basel are the reigning Swiss Super League champions, and Doumbia will be hoping to help them to retain their title.

He has previously enjoyed success in Switzerland with Bern-based Young Boys between 2008 and 2010.
