Euro 2016: Former Magpie Tamas Triumphs

Former Newcastle defender Tamas Kadar helped Hungary open their Euro 2016 campaign with a win

Former Newcastle United defender Tamas Kadar helped Hungary open their Euro 2016 campaign with a shock 2-0 victory over Austria on Tuesday.

The left-sided defender was deployed at full-back for the Group F tie, which saw second half goals from Adam Szalai and Zoltan Stieber secure all three points.

And Kadar, who made 18 appearance for the Magpies between 2009 and 2012, was involved in a controversial moment midway through the second period.

He was on the receiving end of a late challenge from Aleksandar Dragovic, which saw the Austrian sent off for a second bookable offence.

Kadar's next outing could come on Saturday, when Hungary face Iceland in Marseille.

On Monday, ex-United star Shay Given was an unused substitute as Republic of Ireland played out a 1-1 draw with Sweden in Group E.

Norwich forward Wes Hoolahan broke the deadlock for Ireland early in the second half, only to see his brilliant strike cancelled out by Ciaran Clark's own goal.
