Newcastle United's record goalscorer Alan Shearer has been recognised on the Queen's Birthday Honours list.
The former Magpies' striker, who netted 206 goals for the Club in 405 appearances between 1996 and 2006, becomes a CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) for charitable services to the community in the North-East.
Forty-five-year-old Shearer was made an OBE in 2001 and, following his retirement a decade ago has acted as a patron for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, as well as setting up the Alan Shearer Foundation, which supports a centre in his name to help people with disabilities.
"It was a huge surprise and hard work to keep it quiet from the rest of my family and friends," Shearer told BBC Sport about his CBE.
"I had to give something back. Footballers get a lot of criticism for not giving enough back. I was determined not just to hand the money over. I wanted to take an active part in helping to run it. It is great to be involved."
Meanwhile, United fans and television presenters Ant and Dec have also been recognised on the Honours list.
The pair - Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly - have been handed OBEs for their services to broadcasting and entertainment.
