Former Magpies coach John Carver is back in football - and could lead his new club into the Europa League next season

Former Newcastle United coach John Carver has agreed to take charge of AC Omonoia Nicosia.

The 51-year-old was named as the Magpies' head coach following the departure of Alan Pardew in January 2015 but left St. James' Park six months later, at the end of the 2014/15 campaign.

He had worked as assistant manager under Sir Bobby Robson before returning to Newcastle in 2011 after spells with Leeds, Plymouth, Sheffield United and in the MLS with Toronto FC.

Omonoia finished fourth in Cyprus' top division last term and will take part in the Europa League first qualifying round later this month.

A statement from the club read: "Our association announces that it has agreed with the 51-year-old English coach, John William Carver, to take over the coaching of our team.

"Mr Carver is in America for personal reasons, but will break his journey to begin work immediately with our team to begin preparing for the new season."
