Anita's On Red Alert

Written by Newcastle Utd

Vurnon Anita looks ahead to Saturday's Barclays Premier League trip to Anfield, where Newcastle will need another committed display against Liverpool

By Dan King - Newcastle United Digital Editor

Vurnon Anita wants Newcastle to replicate their last two home performances when they travel to Liverpool on Saturday.

United beat Swansea and drew with Manchester City to breathe new life into their campaign, but they have struggled on the road all season long.

And Anita - who scored the Magpies' goal against Champions League-chasing City on Tuesday night - has challenged his team-mates to show the same mixture of commitment and quality which has served them well over the last few days when they head to Anfield.

"It's an away game and we need to show we can do it away as well, with the same intensity and the fighting spirit," Anita told nufcTV.

"We just need to keep on going. We're not there yet, we know that. We need to take it step by step, game by game, and work hard like the last two games and it will come for us."

Liverpool - who lost 2-0 on Tyneside in December - were impressive in defeating local rivals Everton 4-0 on Wednesday evening, but Newcastle should be full of confidence after their own midweek efforts.

Manchester City took the lead through Sergio Sergio Agüero but United roared back and Anita's 31st minute earned them a hard-fought point.

"We worked as a team, we worked very hard, and we kept on going even when we went 1-0 down," said Anita.

"We kept on pushing and I think we deserved the point and maybe more.

"We know that in the position we're in, we need to fight and we need to do it together and I think we showed it (on Tuesday)."

Anita's goal was his first at St. James' Park and only his third for the Club following his arrival from Ajax in the summer of 2012.

He beat England goalkeeper Joe Hart with his less-favoured left-foot - although some of his team-mates joked that it was intended as a cross.

But Anita insisted: "It was a shot! Everybody said it was a cross but it was definitely a shot.

"I came inside and I had my head down; I just saw the goal and I just shot. It was a good goal.

"I hope there's more to come in this run of games but I think it was a good team performance and we need to keep on going.

"The most important thing is to recover again and go for the game on Saturday."
