Loan Watch: Macaulay's Man Of The Match

Written by Newcastle Utd

Macaulay Gillesphey was named man of the match as Carlisle United beat Hartlepool 1-0 on Tuesday

Defender Macaulay Gillesphey was named man of the match as Carlisle United recorded a 1-0 win over Hartlepool United on Tuesday night.

The 20-year-old, who is on loan at Brunton Park until the end of the season along with fellow young Magpie Alex Gilliead, played the full 90 minutes as he helped the Cumbrians keep a clean sheet against Craig Hignett's in-form Pools side.

Gillesphey, who was shifted from left back to centre back at half time, also had a hand in Hallam Hope's winner for Carlisle, as his long pass was pounced upon by the Bury loanee to give Keith Curle's side all three points.

England Under-20 international Gilliead, meanwhile, started the game, but was replaced by Antony Sweeney with just over 20 minutes to go.

Carlisle are now just one point outside the League Two play-off places.

In the Championship, winger Sammy Ameobi was an unused substitute in Cardiff City's 0-0 draw at promotion hopefuls Burnley.

Ameobi has netted once in 35 appearances for Russell Slade's Bluebirds so far this season.
