Mitrovic - "We Must Stay Strong"

Written by Newcastle Utd

Aleksandar Mitrovic says Newcastle can't afford to dwell on Saturday's 3-2 defeat at Norwich, and must focus on beating Southampton in their next fixture

Aleksandar Mitrovic has epitomised Newcastle United's fighting spirit in the Magpies' last two matches, and he has promised that he and his team-mates will keep on battling for every point between now and the end of the season.

The Serbian striker followed up his equaliser against Sunderland with an all-action display and two goals against Norwich City on Saturday, and looked to have rescued another draw for the Magpies with an 86th-minute penalty at Carrow Road.

He cut a disconsolate figure after Martin Olsson's stoppage time goal gave the home side a 3-2 win which leaves Newcastle six points from safety, but vowed to bounce back from the disappointment in the final seven matches of the campaign.

And, speaking to nufcTV, the 21-year-old admitted that his recent run in front of goal has given him plenty of confidence for a run-in which he hopes could yet contain some twists and turns.

"I came from the bench, I scored two goals and I hope I helped my team a little to play better football than in the first half," said Mitrovic, who replaced Vurnon Anita in the 62nd minute.

"In the first half, we didn't play like we want but the second half was really good and we didn't deserve to lose the game. But we lost, and we need to move on and prepare for the next game.

"It's much better if you score goals and you win. I don't need to score if we win games.

"But it's good for me, of course, and I hope I will continue with my goals."

Mitrovic, who joined Newcastle from Anderlecht last summer, now has eight goals this season.

Newcastle travel to Southampton next weekend and the frontman said: "The best way to move on is to win the next game.

"It will be difficult, Southampton away, but we must stay strong in our heads. It's difficult now but we need to start winning games."

And Mitrovic added: "Our fans were amazing, like always. I hope they will stay with us for these seven games because we will need them now more than ever.

"With them, I think anything is possible."
