Former Newcastle United forward Jon Dahl Tomasson has been appointed assistant coach of the Denmark national team.

Tomasson - who bagged 52 goals in 112 appearances for Denmark, making him their all-time joint leading goalscorer - will work under new manager Age Hareide, who took the reins last week.

The 39-year-old, who will begin work with Denmark on 1st June, has been working as an assistant coach at Dutch outfit Vitesse Arnhem, having previously held managerial positions at both Roda JC and Excelsior.

Tomasson spent a solitary year on Tyneside during the early part of his playing career, having been signed by Kenny Dalglish in July 1997, but managed just four goals in 35 appearances for the Club before departing for Feyenoord the following summer.

He went on to star for the Rotterdam club over two spells, and also had spells with AC Milan, Stuttgart and Villarreal before returning to De Kuip to finish his career in 2011.
