Loan Watch: French Pair Start In Draw

Written by Newcastle Utd

A round-up of United's loanees, who were in action across Europe over the weekend

By Anthony Marshall - Newcastle United Managing Editor

Remy Cabella and Florian Thauvin both featured for Marseille in Sunday's Ligue 1 home draw with Saint-Etienne.

The French pair were handed starting spots at the Stade Velodrome, where the majority of the action occurred in the final five minutes.

Thauvin was replaced after 62 minutes, shortly after Marseille were reduced to ten men following a sending off, and Cabella was withdrawn in the 71st minute.

Saint-Etienne took the lead on 85 minutes but in stoppage time the hosts equalised through forward Michy Batshuayi.

Back on home soil, Alex Gilliead and Macaulay Gillesphey helped Carlisle United keep up their push for a League Two play-off place with a 1-0 home win over Stevenage.

The young duo were both named as substitutes for the Cumbrians but entered the fray at half-time at Brunton Park. And the double switch had the desired effect as 14 minutes into the second period, Jabo Ibehre headed the only goal of the game.

Elsewhere in the same division, Kyle Cameron and Lubo Satka both played the full 90 minutes for York City, who slipped to a 3-1 defeat at Cambridge United.

Satka was deployed at right-back, while Cameron was a centre-half for the Minstermen who are a point outside the relegation zone following some recent good form.

In League One, Haris Vuckic was an unused substitute for Wigan Athletic in their 2-1 win at Walsall, while there was also a watching brief for rookie goalkeeper Brendan Pearson, who was unused in Gateshead's 3-2 National League triumph over Aldershot Town.
