Watson Pleased With "Mature" Performance

Dave Watson was happy to see an improved performance from his under-18 side on Saturday

Dave Watson was happy to see an improved performance from his Newcastle United Under-18 side, despite falling to a 2-0 home defeat against Manchester City on Saturday.

After last weekend's 8-0 home defeat at the hands of Everton, Watson was able to field a more experienced starting line-up when the Citizens came to Little Benton.

And he told nufc.co.uk: "The performance was fantastic despite the result.

"We had a lot more experience in our squad compared to last week. We had a few players coming from the under-21s and that makes all the difference, especially at this level.

"It strengthens the team up and it helped us put in a good performance.

"We gave Manchester City a proper game, they had a lot of possession but we still created chances to score and possibly could have got something from the game.

"We were mature, well organised and hard to break down. At 1-0, you've always got a chance and we stayed in the game until the end.

"We were getting back into the game but as we did that we became more open at the back and teams like Manchester City can punish you, which is exactly what they did at the end.

"The lads have put in a really good effort and it was important to bounce back from last week from a performance side of things, and we did just that."
