Goalscorer Daniel Barlaser was "proud" of Newcastle United's under-21s on Monday night, despite their 2-1 defeat to Stoke City.
Right-back Jamie Sterry was somewhat harshly sent off in the 11th minute at St. James' Park and Dominic Telford tucked away the resulting penalty to leave the Magpies with a mountain to climb.
But England under-18 international Barlaser equalised from the spot ten minutes later and it took a stunning late goal from Lewis Banks to give the Potters all three points.
"I was really proud of my team tonight," Gateshead-born Barlaser told nufc.co.uk. "We were unlucky to get beat with ten men.
"We tried to do the right things, got a goal back and I think we dominated the game for large stages, but we just lacked a bit of maturity and sometimes gave the ball away when we shouldn't have.
"We got caught at the end but it was a really good effort by all the lads."
Sterry - who was making his comeback following a hip flexor injury - was shown a straight red card by referee Andrew Miller for bringing down Stoke midfielder Oliver Shenton.
"We were quite unlucky with that," said Barlaser, "but we kept on going. All the fans, all the people watching (on Monday night) know that we were in the game. We were unlucky to get beat in the end
"We changed shape just before half time and that really worked well.
"We tried to do the same in the second half and we created chances - even though Karl (Darlow) made a lot of saves at the other end - but we couldn't finish them off.
"Tiredness probably came into it, but it was a really good performance by the lads."
