Newcastle United youngster Mackenzie Heaney was a late substitute as England's under-17s began the 2016 Algarve Tournament with a 1-1 draw against hosts Portugal on Friday afternoon.

The playmaker from Walker was an 80th-minute replacement for Tottenham's Samuel Shashoua, who scored the Young Lions' equaliser early in the second half after Migel Luis of Sporting Lisbon had given Portugal an eighth-minute lead.

England will use the tournament as preparation for their UEFA European Under-17 Championships Elite Qualifying Round matches next month.

Heaney will hope to start for Steve Cooper's side in their second game of the competition, which will see them face Germany on Sunday afternoon.

The Germans beat the Netherlands 1-0 in the opening match of the tournament earlier on Friday.
