Wijnaldum Delighted To See Perez Put Pen To Paper

Written by Newcastle Utd

Georginio Wijnaldum believes Ayoze Perez fully deserved his new contract, and feels that the Spaniard's extended deal is good news for the player, Club and supporters

Georginio Wijnaldum was delighted to see his Newcastle team-mate Ayoze Perez sign a new five-and-a-half year contract at St. James' Park this week.

The Spaniard, who has been a huge hit since arriving from CD Tenerife 18 months ago, agreed a deal which will see him remain on Tyneside until 2021.

And Wijnaldum - United's top scorer so far this season with nine goals - believes it's great news for the player, the Club and the supporters.

Steve McClaren brought in four new players in the January transfer window, with Henri Saivet, Jonjo Shelvey, Andros Townsend and Seydou Doumbia all arriving at Newcastle in recent days.

But Wijnaldum insisted that securing the signature of Perez was also significant.

"The Club have faith in him and that will give him more confidence, a better feeling," the Holland international told nufc.co.uk.

"It's also good for the fans and for the team.

"Even when (the board) were busy with signing other players, they've also thought about the players that are already in the team, and I think he deserved the new contract."
