Loan Watch: Back At Brunton

Written by Newcastle Utd

A round-up of United's loanees who were in action across Europe over the weekend

By Anthony Marshall - Newcastle United Managing Editor

Carlisle United returned to Brunton Park on Saturday - and three Newcastle United loanees were involved in their homecoming.

The Cumbrians' base was flooded by Storm Desmond seven weeks ago, leaving them to play three home games during that time at neutral venues while the stadium and pitch were restored, following extensive damage to the playing surface, dressing rooms and offices.

And finally back on home soil, Saturday's League Two fixture against basement club York City ended in a 1-1 draw.

Macaulay Gillesphey played the full 90 minutes at left-back for Carlisle, with fellow Magpie Alex Gilliead stepping off the substitutes' bench for the final 26 minutes of the contest.

And there was also a familiar face in the Minstemen's line-up, with central defender Kyle Cameron making the second appearance of his month-long loan spell.

In League One, Shane Ferguson helped Millwall come from behind to secure a 2-1 victory at Chesterfield - a result which lifts the Lions into the play-off places.

The versatile Northern Ireland international was deployed at left-back for the Lions and lasted 76 minutes before being replaced.

Gael Bigirimana was handed a starting spot for Coventry City but couldn't inspire the Sky Blues to a win at Southend United.

Bigirimana played the entire match but there was no place for fellow United youngster Adam Armstrong, who missed out through injury.

Haris Vuckic came on in the 30th minute of Wigan Athletic's League One draw at Crewe Alexandra.

However, the Slovenian international was replaced in the 74th minute at Gresty Road as the game finished 1-1.

In the Championship, Cardiff City's play-off push took a slight stutter following a 2-2 home draw with lowly Rotherham United on Saturday.

Sammy Ameobi was a 76th-minute substitute for Peter Whittingham at the Cardiff City Stadium but was unable to help the Bluebirds pick up all three points.

In the National League, teenage goalkeeper Brendan Pearson was an unused substitute as Gateshead won 2-0 at Torquay United to keep themselves in touching distance of the play-offs.

Finally, across the Channel, Remy Cabella helped Marseille claim a point in a Ligue 1 fixture away at Lyon on Sunday.

The French forward played broke the deadlock in the 64th minute, only to see his effort cancelled out soon after, and was withdrawn from the action with six minutes remaining.
