Daryl Disects Disappointing Defeat

Written by Newcastle Utd

Daryl Janmaat believes a game on Monday is the perfect chance to bounce back from defeat against Everton

By Anthony Marshall - Newcastle United Managing Editor

Daryl Janmaat believes the quick turnaround of festive fixtures is no bad thing as Newcastle United look to bounce back immediately from the disappointment of Boxing Day's last-gasp defeat to Everton.

Tom Cleverley's stoppage-time header at St. James' Park put an end to the Magpies' three game unbeaten run - a loss which was harsh given the spirit and character in United's performance.

But on Monday they have the chance to get back to winning ways at West Bromwich Albion (3pm kick-off) and in the build-up to the match Janmaat will draw upon a memorable away day last season at the Hawthorns.

"I've never lost a game like that before but we have no time to be mad," he told nufc.co.uk following the Everton defeat.

"The next game is less than 48 hours away and that may be good for us. We have to recover, prepare and look forward to West Brom. We have to try and get a result there.

"It will be a tough game but there is no reason why we cannot win there. We did it last season so we know how it feels to win there, and we will remember that on Monday."

Such was Everton's early pressure on Boxing Day, Newcastle were unable to get out of their own half.

However, the Magpies weathered that storm with their clean sheet still in tact and grew in to the contest, threatening through Aleksandar Mitrovic, Ayoze Perez and Georginio Wijnaldum.

Cleverley hit them with a sucker punch right at the death, though, and Janmaat continued: "Whenever you lose a game it is tough but to suffer that in the last minute is even worse.

"And we didn't deserve to lose either, especially in the second half.

"The first 25 minutes was clear - that belonged to Everton - but I felt that if we could survive that and go in 0-0 at half-time we could build on that.

"The way we came back in the second half was very good. We played well, created some big chances and we deserved more than that. We just didn't get the luck."
