Dummett: 'We Must Keep It Going'

Written by Newcastle Utd

Paul Dummett believes Newcastle answered some of their critics against Liverpool - but knows that United can't let their standards slip

By Dan King - Newcastle United Digital Editor

Paul Dummett believes that Newcastle answered some of their doubters in Sunday's 2-0 win over Liverpool - but admits the Magpies now have to maintain that level of performance.

Defeats against Leicester and Crystal Palace saw Steve McClaren's side drop back into the Barclays Premier League relegation zone, and United remained in the bottom three on goal difference despite their victory against Jurgen Klopp's Reds.

But defender Dummett - who made his 50th league appearance for the Club against the Merseysiders - felt that Sunday's display proves that Newcastle's players are fully committed to climbing the table as quickly as possible.

"It was a brilliant win against a top side," Dummett told nufcTV. "All the players, as a team, put in the graft and if we can perform like that week in, week out, I don't think we'll go far wrong.

"We've had a lot of criticism over the last two weeks - and especially the last week, after the Palace game.

"We've took a lot; the team, the manager, the whole Club, so it's nice for us to go out there and show that we do care.

"Keeping a clean sheet for a defender is always big and then we got the two goals as well.

"As a team we defended really well - man for man, I think we were better all over the pitch and that showed.

"Even at the end, we were throwing bodies in front of the ball and blocking shots. We were fortunate because (Alberto Moreno) scored and he was onside, but sometimes you need a bit of luck."

The 24-year-old Academy graduate, who had arguably his best game of the season against Liverpool, added: "When you're getting beat and taking criticism, it is hard; when the fans are not happy, it's always hard.

"But we've come out fighting and hopefully we can take that spirit into the game against Tottenham."
