Loan Watch: Toney On Target

Written by Newcastle Utd

Ivan Toney scored his first Barnsley goal at the weekend as the Tykes took a step closer to Wembley

Ivan Toney opened his goalscoring account for Barnsley to help the Tykes take a step closer to Wembley.

The 19-year-old made his fifth start for the South Yorkshire side as they travelled to Wigan Athletic in the northern area semi-finals of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy on Saturday.

He scored from close range in a 2-2 draw, then converted his kick in the resulting penalty shoot-out, which the Tykes won 4-2.

Barnsley boss Lee Johnson told his club's official website: "I was pleased for Ivan Toney.

"The ground was very draining and a lot of rain had come down, and I gave them a very hard week this week. A lot of the work we produced this week has come to fruition."

It was the final game of Toney's initial one-month loan spell. Haris Vuckic was not involved for Wigan.

Also on target at the weekend was Remy Cabella, who scored his second goal in two games for Marseille in a 2-2 draw with Montpellier on Sunday. The 25-year-old played the whole match.

Sammy Ameobi appeared as an 85th-minute substitute for Cardiff as the Bluebirds beat Bolton 3-2 on Saturday.

His brother Shola started for the Trotters, but had been replaced by Emile Heskey by the time Sammy entered the fray.

Alex Gilliead started for Carlisle as they beat Welling 5-0 in the second round of the Emirates FA Cup. He played for the opening 72 minutes but Macaulay Gillesphey did not feature, having only recently returned to training following an injury.

Gilliead, Gillesphey and the rest of the Carlisle players have offered to help people in their community affected by flooding caused by Storm Desmond.

Tens of thousands of homes across northern England and parts of Scotland are without power after the floods, and Cumbria is one of the worst-hit areas.

Shane Ferguson was not granted permission by Newcastle to play for Millwall in their cup tie at home to Wycombe, and in the absence of the Northern Ireland international the Lions lost 2-1.

Liam Gibson didn't feature for Gateshead as they beat Kidderminster 1-0 thanks to a late Patrick McLaughlin goal while it was a free weekend for Adam Armstrong, Gael Bigirimana and Coventry City.
