Lascelles Is Staying Patient

Written by Newcastle Utd

Jamaal Lascelles spoke to nufc.co.uk after another good display for Newcastle's under-21s against West Brom on Monday

Only 135 dedicated supporters were at a wet Whitley Park to watch Newcastle's 0-0 Barclays Under-21 Premier League draw with West Bromwich Albion on Monday, but Jamaal Lascelles insists that he approached the game - as with every match he plays - like a "cup final".

The 22-year-old defender, who has already made more than 80 senior career appearances, was part of a strong second-string side which also included Siem de Jong, Yoan Gouffran and returning goalkeeper Karl Darlow.

And, just as he did in United's previous under-21 fixture against Aston Villa, the former Nottingham Forest man impressed with his reading of the game and his composure on the ball - not to mention a superb last-ditch tackle to deny Tahvon Campbell what would have been a late winner for the visitors.

Lascelles has made three league appearances under Steve McClaren this season - all as a substitute - and is hoping to continue catching the eye of the Magpies' head coach.

"It's always nice to get 90 minutes and we kept a clean sheet, which is the main thing," he told nufc.co.uk.

"I was really pleased for the boys; a few young boys played and Gally (Owen Gallacher) and Macca (Lewis McNall) were excellent. Gally nearly scored when he came on and so I think the staff will be really pleased with him, but for me I'm just glad to get 90 minutes. It's fitness and match sharpness, which I need.

"It's on the way to where I want to be and if I have to play a few more (under-21 games) then I'll do it.

"I'm just being patient, working hard and doing what the staff say. I'll always give my all, whether it's for the under-21s or the first team.

"I see every game as a cup final - it doesn't matter who the opposition is. I'm always going to see it the same.

"I tried to talk to the boys and help get them through it. I remember when I was younger and I think it's really important when the older lads talk and encourage."

Darlow - who joined United from Forest at the same time as Lascelles - made his comeback from an ankle injury on Monday.

With Tim Krul ruled out for the season, 25-year-old Darlow will look to challenge Rob Elliot for the Newcastle number one shirt over the next few weeks.

Elliot was exceptional against Bournemouth and could not be faulted as the Magpies lost 3-0 to Leicester at the weekend, but Darlow showed what he is capable of with a confident display against the Baggies' second-string.

Lascelles said: "It's nice that Karl was in goal, and to play in front of him. He's an excellent goalkeeper and he made some really good saves.

"I'm used to playing with him so I know when he's going to come out and get it. We've sort of got that connection, which I think is really important for centre-halves and goalkeepers.

"I'm pleased he got through it with no injuries and hopefully he can kick on."
