Teenage left-back Liam Gibson has joined Gateshead on an initial one-month youth loan.

The former Tanfield School pupil, who hails from Stanley in County Durham, has been with Newcastle since the age of 11 and progressed to become a regular at under-21 level last season.

He missed the beginning of the current campaign through illness but has recovered to once more become a key part of Peter Beardsley's second-string side.

And Gibson, 18, could now be given the opportunity to gain experience at Vanarama National League level. His debut could come against FC Halifax Town at the International Stadium on Saturday (kick-off 3pm).

His loan spell runs up until Gateshead's home game with Woking on Saturday, 19th December.

Gateshead are currently 11th in the league, but Malcolm Crosby's men sit just a few points off the play-off places.
