Dummett's Derby Disappointment

Paul Dummett cut a frustrated figure following Newcastle United's 3-0 defeat at Sunderland on Sunday

Paul Dummett cut a frustrated figure following Newcastle United's 3-0 defeat at Sunderland in Sunday's Tyne-Wear derby.

The homegrown defender admitted the Magpies were in "complete control" for long periods of the Barclays Premier League fixture at the Stadium of Light, but losing key players Fabricio Coloccini and Jack Colback - to a red card and injury respectively - were contributing factors in United's loss.

Coloccini was dismissed right on the stroke of half-time, having given away a penalty which Adam Johnson converted - a decision which did not go down well in the visitors' dressing room.

Billy Jones and Steven Fletcher netted in the second period to secure all three points for the Black Cats, but Dummett was proud of his teammates' efforts and endeavour on a difficult afternoon on Wearside.

"It's very disappointing, especially after the start we made in the first half," he told nufc.co.uk.

"We had complete control of the game, they never looked like troubling us until right at the end (of the first half) when a huge decision changed the game.

"I haven't seen it again but from my view on the pitch it looked harsh. It should never have even been a foul, in my opinion.

"From then they got their goals and it's hard with ten men in the Premier League - that's never going to be easy.

"We created a lot but couldn't find a way past their keeper. It wasn't to be but the lads battled on really well, especially with ten men.

"Credit to the lads because even with the Colo getting sent off and Jack having to go off injured, we battled on well.

"You could see the players wanted to win throughout. We never stopped - even in the 90th minute at 3-0 down we were still trying to attack and score goals.

"Unfortunately though you don't get any points for that - it's the goals that count and we didn't score any.

"It's never nice losing against Sunderland and we've got to look to next week, where we've got to stand up and go again."
