Derby Is Madley's Fourth Magpies Match

Robert Madley will take charge of only his fourth Newcastle fixture on Sunday as they travel to Sunderland

By Anthony Marshall - Newcastle United Managing Editor

Robert Madley will take charge of only his fourth Newcastle United fixture on Sunday as they travel to local rivals Sunderland in the Tyne-Wear derby (noon kick-off).

It is the first time this season the West Yorkshire-based official has refereed a Magpies match, but he was the man in the middle of two last term - a home defeat to Southampton and a Capital One Cup tie at Crystal Palace.

Before that, Madley's only experience of officiating United was a Carling Cup defeat at Blackburn in October 2011, which went to extra-time.

In total this season, Madley has overseen nine fixtures across the Premier League, Championship and Capital One Cup, issuing 35 yellow cards and one red.

Madley started refereeing in the Wakefield and District League in 2001 before progressing to the West Yorkshire Association Football League.

In 2010 he became a Football League official and in April 2013 took charge of his first Premier League fixture, between Southampton and West Bromwich Albion at St Mary's Stadium.

On Sunday at the Stadium of Light, Madley will be assisted by David Bryan and John Brooks, with Mike Dean the game's fourth official.
