Rob Elliot will be goal for Newcastle United as they entertain Norwich City in the Barclays Premier League on Sunday (4pm kick-off).

First choice stopper Tim Krul suffered a season-ending anterior cruciate ligament injury while on international duty with Holland last weekend.

And Magpies head coach Steve McClaren has revealed that Elliot - who has just returned from a nine-month lay-off with a recurring thigh injury - will be given the nod this weekend as the Canaries come to Tyneside.

"It is time for Rob Elliot to step forward and fill Tim's boots," McClaren told the media on Thursday afternoon.

"He has to step up and perform. Rob is in as good-a-condition as you can be without actually playing. He missed pre-season (through injury) but has trained the last few weeks.

"There was the possibility of Rob going out on loan but I said to keep him here because we like him.

"He's very good in training and now he has to produce in games."

While's Krul's injury was a "bitter blow" for everyone at St. James' Park according to McClaren, there has been some positive news on the fitness front.

Defensive trio Daryl Janmaat, Paul Dummett and Massadio Haidara, and midfielder Jack Colback have been back in training this week, and are in contention for Sunday's fixture.

"Janmaat has trained the last couple of days," revealed the boss.

"Colback has trained, Haidara has trained and Dummett also."
