Under-18 coach Dave Watson felt Manchester City had "too much quality" for his Newcastle United youngsters on Saturday.
The top-versus-bottom Barclays Under-18 Premier League clash saw the Citizens run away 6-1 winners and Watson believes the Magpies' poor start set the tone for another disappointing afternoon.
United were two goals down inside the first five minutes in Manchester, and things didn't get any easier from there as City went on to score another four.
"We got off to a very bad start," Watson told nufc.co.uk.
"We went two goals down straight away which knocked our confidence and we couldn't recover from that.
"Manchester City just had far too much quality in their side and they were better than us all over the pitch - that's why they're top of the league."
The Magpies have now lost each of their last five league games, conceding 19 and scoring just three in the process.
And Watson admitted his side have been far too generous in recent weeks.
"We gave a few daft goals away again today," continued the under-18s coach.
"I'd say three of the six goals we conceded were completely avoidable. We gifted them a few goals so maybe 6-1 wasn't really the fairest reflection of the game.
"We put in an honest performance with plenty of character and effort but there's just no escaping the fact that they were just too strong and deserved to win it comfortably.
"We have to realise this is a side that have only lost once this season. We're not the first team to be well beaten by them and we certainly won't be the last."
