Mixed Emotions For Dutch Pair

Written by Newcastle Utd

Georginio Wijnaldum scored for Holland but Tim Krul suffered a knee injury in their match on Saturday night

By Anthony Marshall - Newcastle United Managing Editor

Georginio Wijnaldum scored his fourth goal for Holland on Saturday night, but Magpies teammate Tim Krul suffered a knee injury in a 2-1 victory away at Kazakhstan.

The Dutch kept alive their hopes of securing a play-off place for next summer's European Championships, as Wijnaldum and Wesley Sneijder struck either side of half-time to secure all three points. The hosts netted an injury-time consolation through Islambek Kuat.

Wearing the number eight shirt, Wijnaldum threatened with a header shortly before he broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute.

Anwar El Ghazi's lay-off set up the United midfielder, who made no mistake with a low left-footed shot.

However, it wasn't all positive news for Newcastle as goalkeeper Krul - recalled to the Netherlands starting line-up for his eighth senior cap - was withdrawn after 81 minutes with a knee injury.

Krul left the Astana Arena on crutches and will undergo a scan to determine the severity of the injury.

An update on Krul's fitness will be provided on nufc.co.uk in due course.
