Ivan Toney has been named the Barclays Under-21 Player of the Month for September.
The 19-year-old frontman scored two goals in three games for Peter Beardsley's under-21 side last month and impressed Steve McClaren to the extent that he handed the teenager a top flight debut in the 2-2 draw against Chelsea. In the process, Toney became the 200th player to represent Newcastle in the Premier League.
The summer signing from Northampton didn't score in his first three Barclays Under-21 Premier League games of the season, but Beardsley singled him out for praise after a 2-1 defeat to Arsenal at St. James' Park on 11th September.
He told nufc.co.uk: "I think we've got a real chance with Ivan. He's been a massive plus for us.
"He wants to score goals, he wants to make goals, and he wants the team to win. I think we've hit lucky with Ivan."
Toney responded by scoring in the under-21s' next game, away to West Ham United, when he squeezed home a low shot following good work from Callum Roberts.
And he followed that up with a wonderful goal against Swansea at Whitley Park seven days later when he lofted a superb finish from 22 yards beyond visiting goalkeeper Josh Vickers.
