Consistency Is Key For Head Coach

Steve McClaren wants Newcastle United to "show some consistency", starting at the Etihad Stadium

Steve McClaren wants Newcastle United to "show some consistency" in their upcoming games, as the Magpies prepare to travel to Manchester City on Saturday (3pm kick-off).

United go to the Etihad Stadium still searching for their first win of the 2015/16 Barclays Premier League campaign, but have displayed their ability to hold their own against the top teams.

There have been disappointing performances along the way too, however, and McClaren feels his side need to put together a good run of form to show exactly what they are capable of.

"Consistency now, that's what were after," said the Magpies' head coach.

"That kind of performance we saw last week, particularly in the first half, is what we are after and now it's about maintaining that.

"We've been inconsistent from the start of the season but we had a good performance last weekend and hopefully we will tomorrow as well.

"The first eight games were always going to be tough when you're playing against last season's top teams. After seven games we are starting to get a little closer to our starting XI, our system of play and our style."

Next week sees some of Newcastle's stars head off to represent their respective nations in a range of competitive and friendly fixtures.

And while it gives some of his injured players extra time to regain fitness, McClaren also feels the international break could hinder United's ability to find form.

"The last international break disrupted our momentum and we struggled to get it back," he continued.

"Hopefully we won't let it effect us as much this time because we're progressing and we're getting closer to where we want to be.

"Last week was encouraging with the performance but not only that, the fans, the atmosphere and the acceptance of the style of play we brought into the game - we need more of that."
