Steven Taylor will be sidelined for "a couple of months" following an operation on a hamstring injury.
The long-serving centre-back has missed Newcastle United's last two Barclays Premier League fixtures with the complaint, and head coach Steve McClaren confirmed on Tuesday that Taylor has gone under the surgeon's knife.
"He had a scan on his hamstring," explained McClaren.
"He's had a small operation to repair the damage and unfortunately it looks like he'll be out for a couple of months."
Taylor has made two appearance this season - both in the Premier League - taking his total to 260 senior outings for the Magpies since making his debut in March 2004.
