Watson: "We Deserved More"

Newcastle United Under-18s coach Dave Watson felt his side "deserved more" following a 4-1 defeat away to Middlesbrough on Saturday.

The Magpies failed to capitalise on their first half dominance and were made to rue a number of missed chances at Rockcliffe Park.

Watson pointed to Gideon Adu-Peprah's dismissal early in the second half with the scores level, as an inevitable turning point.

"The sending off turned the game," he told nufc.co.uk.

"I'm not sure it was a straight red but before that we were very much on top.

"We created enough chances in the first half to be 3-0 ahead, they didn't cause us many problems and we deserved to take the lead but then out of nothing they grabbed an equaliser just before half-time which gave them confidence.

"Then came the sending-off, which changed things, but we remained positive and still managed to cause them some problems.

"Overall it was a very strange game, they took their chances and we didn't and just when it looked like we could get back into it, they scored two goals from nothing.

"It wasn't really a fair reflection on how the game went, I think we deserved more from the game but we just couldn't convert our chances."

Watson's side will be hoping for more conviction in front of goal at home to Sunderland on Saturday.

"Sunderland is obviously a massive game that all the lads will want to win," he continued.

"Everyone wants to be involved and you'll see that in the training sessions leading up to it, so I think we're in for a very interesting week."
