Internationals - Another Cap For Chancel

Written by Newcastle Utd

A round-up of the weekend's international action involving Chancel Mbemba, Georginio Wijnaldum and Alex Gilliead

By Anthony Marshall - Newcastle United Managing Editor

Chancel Mbemba won his 18th cap for DR Congo on Sunday, but was unable to inspire his nation to victory as they slipped to a 2-0 defeat away at Central African Repulic.

The fixture was a qualifier for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations and saw Mbemba and Co undone by a couple of first-half goals - one of which was a penalty.

The results leaves DR Congo in third place in Group B with three points after two games but just one point behind leaders Angola.

Elsewhere, Georginio Wijnadlum was a half-time substitute for Holland, who look in serious danger of missing out on Euro 2016 following a 3-0 defeat in Turkey on Sunday.

The midfielder replaced defender Stefan de Vrij at the break with the hosts already two up, and he came close to halving the deficit almost immediately but was unable to score with a headed chance.

Magpies teammates Tim Krul and Vurnon Anita were unused substitutes for Holland, who are now fourth in Group A with two games remaining.

On Saturday, Alex Gilliead was handed a starting role for England Under-20s in a behind-closed-doors fixture at St. George's Park against the Czech Republic.

Gilliead played for an hour in a role wide on the right and supplied one assist in a 5-0 triumph for the Young Lions.

Elsewhere, goalkeeper Paul Woolston was an unused substitute for England Under-18s, who played out a goalless draw in Holland.
