Heaney Helps Young Lions To Victory

Newcastle United teenager Mackenzie Heaney impressed on his England Under-17 debut

Newcastle United teenager Mackenzie Heaney impressed on his England Under-17 debut in a 3-0 victory over Italy on Wednesday night.

The 16-year-old was handed a starting spot wide on right and almost broke the deadlock early on for the Young Lions.

Racing on to a low cross from Adam Lewis which took the Italian goalkeeper and defence out of the game, Heaney seemingly only needed to tap home but was denied by a brilliant block on the line.

After a couple of other near misses, Lewis finally found the back of the net before half-time, and Sadou Diallo sealed the victory with a pair of penalties in the second period.

Just before England's third goal of the contest, Heaney again threatened - this time going even closer as his curling effort from the edge of the area struck the outside of the post.

Nevertheless, it was an encouraging performance from the Magpies' Academy star, and Heaney will be hoping to be involved again on Friday, when England face Turkey.
