Karl In Contention For Cobblers Cup Clash

Written by Newcastle Utd

Goalkeeper Karl Darlow believes a run in the Capital One Cup would be "excellent" for Newcastle United

By Dan King - Newcastle United Digital Editor

Karl Darlow twice went to Wembley to watch Northampton Town in the late 1990s.

But on Tuesday night, the goalkeeper is hoping to help end the Cobblers chances of getting to the national stadium in this year's Capital One Cup - and take Newcastle a step closer to lifting major silverware for the first time since 1969.

The 24-year-old was born in Northampton and could make his Magpies debut against the side from the East Midlands in a second round tie at St. James' Park.

And he told nufcTV: "I've been to a few (Northampton) games when I was younger. I went to a couple of play-off finals against Grimsby and Swansea, a few years back now.

"I've got some good memories of going to watch the local team.

"It's a crazy fixture for me. When I saw the draw come out, I couldn't have imagined it would be Northampton at home.

"It would be a perfect one for me to make my debut in, being my home club. I'm excited for it.

"I always look out for their results. They've started off very well (this season) so it'll be interesting to see how they approach the game."

Darlow joined Newcastle from Nottingham Forest at the beginning of last season but was immediately loaned back to the City Ground and made 42 appearances in the Championship last term.

So if he does make his Magpies bow on Tuesday, it will have been a long time coming.

He admitted: "It's been a long time, but since the start of this season it's not been too long.

"It would be a nice one to get under my belt; we'll see what happens. If selected, I'll be ready for it."

Newcastle reached the last eight of the Capital One Cup last season before losing to eventual runners-up Tottenham, and Darlow is hoping that United can go even further this time around.

He said: "It'd be excellent. Momentum's key in all fixtures, I think, so if we can get a positive result that'll just feed throughout the Club.

"Then it's onto Arsenal on Saturday, which is obviously another big game after a positive result last Saturday."
