Coote In Control Of Cobblers' Cup Clash

Written by Newcastle Utd

David Coote will referee United's Capital One Cup second round home tie against Northampton

By Anthony Marshall - Newcastle United Managing Editor

David Coote will referee Newcastle United's Capital One Cup second round home tie against Northampton Town on Tuesday (7.45pm kick-off).

It is the first time the Nottinghamshire-based official has taken charge of a Magpies first-team match. However, he has refereed at St. James' Park before - in an FA Youth Cup quarter-final fixture between the Magpies and Chelsea, in February of this year.

Coote has been the man in the middle of four fixtures so far during the 2015/16 campaign - all in the Championship - issuing 15 yellow cards and no reds.

One of the most highly-rated young referees in the country, Coote began life as a whistle-blower at the age of just 16.

Having worked his way up through the non-league pyramid, he was promoted to the Football League list as an assistant referee, where his first fixture cames in a League Two clash between Stockport County and Hereford United.

Coote was promoted to the list of Football League referees in 2010, and in May 2014 took charge of the League One play-off final at Wembley, between Rotherham United and Leyton Orient.

On Tuesday at St. James' Park, Coote will be assisted by William Smallwood and Martin Coy, with Darren Handley the game's fourth official.

Tickets for Tuesday's Capital One Cup fixture against Northampton Town are still available, priced at just £15 for adults and £5 for concessions. To secure your seat at St. James' Park, click here.
