United Handed Northampton Home Draw

Written by Newcastle Utd

United have been drawn at home against Northampton Town in the second round of the Capital One Cup

By Anthony Marshall - Newcastle United Managing Editor

Newcastle United have been drawn at home against Northampton Town in the second round of the Capital One Cup.

The draw was made on Thursday night, and has given the Magpies a home tie against the League Two outfit, who beat Blackpool 3-0 earlier this week to reach this stage.

Northampton, who are managed by Chris Wilder, finished 12th in the fourth tier last season, and teenage striker Ivan Toney swapped the Cobblers for Tyneside earlier this month.

The teams have never met before in the League Cup, although when they faced each other in the FA Cup third round in 1987 at St. James' Park, Newcastle ran out 2-1 winners, thanks to goals from Andy Thomas and Paul Goddard.

In nine games against the Cobblers in all competitions, United have won four and drawn two, scoring 16 goals and conceding 11.

The tie will be played at St. James' Park in the week commencing Monday, 24th August, and a date for the fixture and ticket details will be announced on nufc.co.uk in due course.
