Physical Friendly Doesn't Bother Gouffran

Written by Newcastle Utd

Yoan Gouffran spoke to nufc.co.uk after United's 2-1 defeat by Club Atlas, which was a bruising encounter

By Anthony Marshall - Newcastle United Managing Editor

Yoan Gouffran was unconcerned by the physical nature of Tuesday night's pre-season fixture against Club Atlas - believing it is all good preparation for Newcastle United.

The Magpies suffered a 2-1 defeat against their Mexican opponents in Milwaukee, but it was only a friendly by name, with some strong challenges flying in during an intense 90 minutes at the Miller Park baseball stadium.

Atlas are in the final stages of their build-up to their new campaign, while United by contrast are just beginning, and Gouffran was pleased to get 73 minutes in the tank, albeit with a few bumps and bruises, too.

"Their first game is next week, so they have to be competitive," the French forward told nufc.co.uk.

"Sometimes there was some strong tackles and some bad kicks but it was good for us because the Premier League is the same - very tough and physical.

"So it is the same type of game and helps get us ready for the new season in England..

"It was a good game. We lost but I think we did well overall. Yes, we conceded two goals in the first 20 minutes but after that we were much better and we are working hard to be fit. This game will be good for us.

"Pre-season is all about finding fitness and doing the right things on the pitch

"We feel better day after day, week after week. We are getting fitter. Some players played 70 minutes tonight and we feel good."

And after a fortnight working under new head coach Steve McClaren and his coaching staff, how has Gouffran found things?

"It is different but good," he continued.

"They want to play well and want us to show good things all the time.

"He wants us to pass the ball and that will suit the players we have. It is a very good idea."
