Barlaser Receives England Call

Daniel Barlaser has become the third Newcastle player to be called up for the England under-18s squad ahead of this month's double-header against Russia.

The Gateshead-born youngster's Club colleagues Adam Armstrong and Freddie Woodman were picked in Neil Dewsnip's initial 18-man squad, and Tottenham midfielder Josh Onomah's withdrawal has seen Barlaser drafted into the party.

Former Charles Thorp Comprehensive School pupil Barlaser was part of Newcastle's team at the Hong Kong Football Club Citibank Soccer Sevens at the weekend, with Peter Beardsley's squad due to touch back down in the UK on Tuesday.

The England Under-18s squad will meet up in Surrey on Tuesday afternoon for three days of training before departing for Moscow.

And Woodman has backed his United team-mate to shine for the Young Lions. Speaking to TheFA.com, the goalkeeper said: "Dan will bring some quality to the squad. There is a lot of competition within this age group and a lot of players to pick from. Dan has got his chance now.

"His range of passing is very good and he has scored a lot of goals from outside the box too, so he will be hoping to make an impact and show people what he can do. He's a really nice lad and the boys will welcome him into the set-up."

Barlaser, 18, has been with Newcastle since the age of nine and signed his first professional contract in February.

Woodman added: "It's great for the Club. There are a lot of good young players from the under-16s all the way up and I know the Academy have worked really hard with the likes of me, Dan, Arma (Armstrong) and Rolando (Aarons).

"It's good recognition for the Academy staff to have players on international duty and there is a lot more coming through. You look at the likes of Paul Woolston, who has just played for England at the Under-17s Euros - it is really good to see.

"I play and train with these lads and get to see their ability and it is nice to go away and be able to share an international moment with them."

Barlaser has previously represented Turkey at youth level.

England under-18s face Russia at Arena Khimki in Moscow on Monday 8th and Wednesday 10th June.
