Woolston's Dutch Draw

Young goalkeeper Paul Woolston helped England's under-17s stay top of their European Championships group with a 1-1 draw against Holland

England stayed top of their UEFA European Under-17 Championships group after a 1-1 draw with Holland on Sunday evening.

Newcastle goalkeeper Paul Woolston started for the Young Lions after his clean sheet in the opening game on Thursday, a 1-0 win over Italy.

And John Peacock's side looked to be on course for another victory when Timothy Fosu-Mensah put through his own net in the 18th minute.

However, the Dutch were awarded a debatable penalty in the 56th minute and Reda Boultam was able to send Woolston the wrong way from the spot.

The 16-year-old keeper was well protected by his defence in Stara Zagora, Bulgaria, but looked assured throughout.

England face Republic of Ireland in their final Group D game on Wednesday knowing that a victory will see them through to the quarter-finals.

And coach Peacock told TheFA.com: "This was probably the toughest group of the four and to be sitting on top at this stage is very positive.

"We've gone into every game with a positive frame of mind and we will do so again versus Ireland."

England won the competition in Malta last summer. Freddie Woodman and Adam Armstrong were both part of that squad.
