Loan Watch: Vuckic Stars In Gers Victory

Written by Newcastle Utd

United pair Haris Vuckic and Sylvain Marveaux were in action for their loan sides over the weekend

By Anthony Marshall - Newcastle United Managing Editor

Haris Vuckic played a key role as Rangers triumphed in the first-leg of their Scottish Premiership play-off quarter-final at Queen of the South.

The Slovenian international forward started at Palmerston Park and played 82 minutes of the contest, which finished 2-1 in the Gers' favour.

Vuckic had a hand in both of the visitors' goals.

Having already gone close himself in the early exchanges, Vuckic was brought down 30 yards out just before half-time, and teammate Stevie Smith stepped up to clip home a brilliant free-kick.

Queen of the South equalised just past the hour mark, but soon after Rangers were back in front.

Vuckic combined well with Richard Foster down the right, and Dean Shiels headed home the latter's cross for what turned out to be the winner.

Fellow Magpies loanee Remie Streete was an unused substitute for the visitors, having returned to fitness.

Rangers will face Queen of the South at Ibrox in the second-leg of the quarter-final on Sunday (3.30pm kick-off).

Elsewhere, Sylvain Marveaux's Guingamp suffered a 6-0 reverse at Ligue 1 leaders Paris Saint-Germain.

Edson Cavani scored a hat-trick, while Zlatan Ibrahimovic bagged a brace and Maxwell was also on target for the big-spending Parisians.

Marveaux was deployed in the number ten role for Guingamp and played 87 minutes at the Parc des Princes before being replaced.
