Vurnon Anita was pleased to give Newcastle United's supporters something to shout about again, as the Magpies drew 1-1 against West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.

Despite largely dominating the Barclays Premier League encounter at St. James' Park, United had to settle for a share of the spoils agains the Baggies.

Albion opened the scoring as Victor Anichebe headed home a Craig Gardner free-kick, but the visitors' lead lasted a mere nine minutes as Ayoze Perez levelled with his seventh goal of the season.

Dutch international Anita played a pivotal role filling in at right-back, and told nufc.co.uk "We ended our (eight-game) losing run by getting the point so we are happy about that.

"Of course we would prefer to win, but we didn't lose so that's important.

"I think we were the only team that wanted to play and wanted to win out on the pitch, everybody was more confident and ready for the fight.

"We fought with every inch and the fans got right behind us for that - they gave us the boost to keep on going and try to win the game.

"When the crowd are behind you it's like having a 12th man. It's a great help, but you have to earn their support and make them want to be behind you. Today, I think we did that."

Newcastle travel to Loftus Road next Saturday in their penultimate fixture of the season, to face a Queens Park Rangers side who could be relegated by the time the match is played.

Anita, however, is determined not to take note of other results and remains focused on the job he and teammates still have left to do.

"It's down to us players to work their hardest for the team to get points because it is about the whole team and not just individual players," added the 26-year-old.

"We will be more confident going (to QPR) after getting a point because we know what we can do.

"We don't need to watch other teams and their results it's about ourselves and winning our last two games.

"We must take forward everything positive out of this game to keep spirits high and keep pushing forward."
