Jack Colback has urged his teammates not to "go hiding" after Newcastle United suffered a sixth successive Barclays Premier League defeat on Sunday.
The Magpies went down 3-1 at home to Tottenham Hotspur, with Colback on target for the hosts with a goal that briefly drew them level early in the second half.
However, they were unable to salvage anything from the contest at St. James' Park, and Colback insists that rather than feeling sorry for themselves, United have to show their character and bounce back with a much-needed win against Swansea next weekend.
"It's another game and another disappointment," the Killingworth-born midfielder told nufc.co.uk.
"We had the ideal recovery, getting the goal at the start of the second half, but we couldn't push on from there and conceded another soft goal.
"Then the third goal just came on the break from us trying to equalise.
"Tottenham kept the ball well and made it difficult at times but I felt we were still quite solid. But when you are in the sort of form we are, if you concede first then it is very difficult.
"We've got to pick ourselves up. No-one is going to give us a win - we have to do it ourselves and as quickly as possible.
"We have to stand up and make sure we don't go hiding. We have got another home game next weekend, against Swansea, and we have to come out and try to win that one."
Colback's strike - latching onto a loose ball in the area just 18 seconds into the second half - was his fourth of the season.
It is something the midfielder has tried to add to his game but Colback revealed it matters little when those goals don't equal points.
"In a certain degree (I am pleased to score), but I would rather be sat in the top half of the table with no goals to my name in a team that is playing well and winning games," he said.
"I'd rather that any personal accolades.
"Obviously it's pleasing to score but we still ended up on the losing side so there isn't much to shout about."
