Coach Carver Targets Anfield Points

John Carver admits United need to start picking up points, and quickly, if they are to climb up the Premier League table

John Carver admits Newcastle United need to start picking up points, and quickly, if they are to climb back up the Barclays Premier League table.

The Magpies travel to Anfield to face Liverpool on Monday night (8pm kick-off) - a ground where they haven't tasted victory since 1994.

Brendan Rodgers' Reds are currently trying to find a way back into the top flight's top four, and Carver knows his side will have to be at their best if they are to return to Tyneside with anything to show for their efforts.

"There's only nine points between us and the relegation zone so if we get nothing at Liverpool that could reduce to six," explained Carver, ahead of the fixture.

"Relegation is always a worry. We need to start picking up the points somewhere no matter how we do it.  I'm not too concerned with how we play, I'm more concerned with the final result and we need to get something from Liverpool.

"They (Liverpool) are only seven points off the top four and they'll definitely think they still have a chance of getting there. I'll be very surprised if their manager (Brendan Rogers) hasn't prepared them for our game with that in mind.

"We know it's going to be a difficult game but I think there's a bit of pressure on the home side as well.

"Our fans need to get behind the team. We've seen the difference it can make when you have that support behind you.

"They love this football club and they just need to see us giving everything we can. We need them behind us."
