Woolston Off To Winning Start

Written by Newcastle Utd

Paul Woolston helped England Under-17s make a winning start to their European Championship qualifiers

By Anthony Marshall - Newcastle United Managing Editor

Paul Woolston helped England Under-17s make a winning start to their European Championship Elite Qualifying Round campaign at the weekend.

The Young Lions saw off the challenge of Norway at Burton Albion's Pirelli Stadium, triumphing 3-1 thanks to goals from Daniel Wright, Danny Collinge and Layton Ndukwu.

Goalkeeper Woolston - a regular for United's under-18 side this season - played the full 90 minutes and put in a solid performance, beaten only when a defensive lapse saw Andreas Helmersen race away down the left, with his low centre finished off by Risa Birk.

That goal cancelled out Wright's opener, but England struck twice in the second-half to secure all three points.

Woolston and Co host Slovenia on Monday night in their next fixture, followed by a clash with Romania on Thursday.
