Teenage midfielder Daniel Barlaser has signed his first professional contract at Newcastle United.

The 18-year-old, who can play in a central role or out wide, has put pen to paper on a long-term deal at St. James' Park, following in the footsteps of teammate Callum Roberts, who also agreed terms last month.

Gateshead-born Barlaser has been with the Club since the age of nine and signed a two-year scholarship at the Little Benton Academy in 2013.

Since then, the Turkish under-17 international has gone on to become a regular in Peter Beardsley's under-21 side and was part of the first team matchday squad for December's Capital One Cup quarter-final tie at Tottenham Hotspur.

Barlaser - a former Charles Thorp Comprehensive School pupil - said: "I'm really proud and happy to sign for my local club, who I have supported all my life.

"I think I've played quite well this season and have played more games than anyone else at under-21 level.

"Being involved in the first team a couple of times has been really good as well, and I want to thank all my family and friends for getting me where I am."

Newcastle United head coach John Carver added: "Dan has been excellent this season, both for the under-21s and in the FA Youth Cup and fully deserves his first professional contract.

"He is real box-to-box midfielder who is good on the ball, and has benefited from regularly training with the first team group.

"Dan is a local lad and a really nice kid who is always keen to learn and improve his game. We hope he continues to progress."
