Tim's Take On Tigers Triumph

Written by Newcastle Utd

Tim Krul believes United rode their luck on Saturday but was delighted with a perfect away-day in the end

By Anthony Marshall - Newcastle United Managing Editor

Goalkeeper Tim Krul believes Newcastle United rode their luck at times at the KC Stadium on Saturday, but was delighted with a perfect away-day in the end.

The Magpies triumphed 3-0 over Hull City thanks to a trio of individual efforts from Remy Cabella, Sammy Ameobi and Yoan Gouffran.

However, while the scoreline looks comprehensive it doesn't tell the full story of a match in which United were twice forced to clear efforts off the line, as well as the Tigers spurning some good openings.

But Krul insists Newcastle's defensive resilience - and subsequent shut-out - speaks volumes about the character in the squad right now.

"A win and a clean sheet away from home - you can't ask for much more than that," the Dutch international stopper told nufc.co.uk.

"It was difficult condtions - cold, windy, a slippy pitch, horrible really. So to walk away with three points was massive.

"We have to be honest, we were a little bit lucky at times. It wasn't a clear-cut 3-0 easy game at all.

"We had to be on our toes in defence - it was old-school off-the-line clearances, last-ditch tackles and blocks. But that's the spirit you need and want, because we are all fighting for each other.

"The back four were great and Vurnon and Jack tidying up were excellent. I'm really pleased with the whole team."

The result was a first victory for John Carver, who has been appointed as new head coach until the end of the season, and Krul believes his reign has got off to an encouraging start.

"We're working on specific things and the first signs are there," said Krul.

"Hopefully we can keep building on them, and when you get wins like this you can't complain.

"John is clear in telling everyone their jobs, and also makes it clear that if they don't want to do it, they won't play. If people don't want to work for the team or put in a shift, then they are out. We are getting players back now and will have great strength in the squad."
