North Shields-born teenager Callum Roberts has signed his first professional contract with Newcastle United.

The talented winger, 17, made his senior debut for the Magpies in the FA Cup third round defeat at Leicester City earlier this month, having broken into the first-team set-up in recent months.

A boyhood Newcastle supporter, Roberts has been with the Club since the age of eight and signed a two-year scholarship at the Little Benton Academy in 2013.

He became increasingly influential for Peter Beardsley's under-21 side in the second half of last season and continued to impress this term, scoring five times at second-string level and three times for the under-18s.

Roberts - a former Churchill Community College pupil - said: "I'm really proud to have signed a professional contract with my boyhood club.

"It's only recently that I was in the stands at St. James' Park as a supporter so to be playing here is a dream come true.

"I've only made one appearance so far but now I'm hoping to make many more over the next few years and become more and more important to the team."

John Carver, appointed on Monday as United's head coach until the end of the season, added: "As a Club, we've had a lot of success in terms of bringing players through lately and Callum is another who we have high hopes for.

"He's really stood out for the under-21s this season and he deserved to make his debut in the FA Cup earlier this month.

"You don't get too many out-and-out wingers like him these days and he's started to add goals to his game too.

"He's a local lad and we like him a lot so we're delighted that he's signed this long-term contract and look forward to seeing how he develops."
