Peter Beardsley has challenged his side to make up for the disappointment of losing to Blackburn in the quarter-finals of the Under-21 Premier League Cup when they face Reading on Saturday.
A solitary Dean Rittenberg goal was the difference at St. James' Park on Monday night and it's back to Barclays Under-21 Premier League action for the Magpies for a 1pm kick-off at the Royals' Hogwood Park training ground.
Australian defender Curtis Good, who hasn't played since suffering a hip injury while on loan at Dundee United last season - travelled with the squad on Friday, having proven his fitness at United's warm-weather training camp in Dubai.
Freddie Woodman was also with the group in the Middle East and is likely to start in goal while Remie Streete will come into the defence after missing the Blackburn game through injury.
Midfielder Olivier Kemen - who was sent off late on against Rovers - misses out through injury. He will be suspended for the under-21s' game at home to Arsenal.
"You always say that when you have a bad result - at whatever level - you want to play again as quickly as you can," Beardsley told nufc.co.uk.
"And luckily for us, we're able to play again four days later. Often we can go ten or 12 days without a game so I'm pleased we've got a chance to play so quickly."
Saturday's game will be played behind closed doors.
