Newcastle United were given a boost on Thursday morning after Dutch international Siem de Jong returned to training.
The summer signing from Ajax, who has only featured three times since his switch to Tyneside last July, has been sidelined since the start of September with a thigh injury that required surgery.
But more than four months later, attacking midfielder de Jong is back training with his teammates, and was also joined by Mehdi Abeid, who has recovered from a fractured toe.
"There's some good news for us on the injury front, as Mehdi Abeid trained with us for the first time today, along with Siem de Jong," explained caretaker manager John Carver, ahead of Saturday's Barclays Premier League home fixture against Southampton.
"Mehdi is a lot further forward than Siem because of the injury Siem had, but that is good news.
"Sammy Ameobi managed to play 60 minutes on Monday night for the under-21s and did very well, so that was pleasing.
"And Davide Santon got through another 90 minutes. He had a little bit of a tight hamstring after but was fine this morning. It's all good and positive."
United's stand-in boss also revealed that winger Gabriel Obertan is edging closer to a return following a lengthy thigh complaint.
"Gaby is possibly about a week or two away from joining in with the team," said Carver.
"He's worked extremely hard and is in great physical condition, so really we just need to get some football in him now."
