Woolston Plays In Brazil Draw

Paul Woolston helped England Under-17s earn a draw with Brazil in the Nike International Tournament

By Tom Easterby

Teenage Newcastle United goalkeeper Paul Woolston helped England Under-17s earn a 2-2 draw with Brazil in the Nike International Tournament on Sunday.

The 17-year-old, who kept Brazil at bay with a string of saves in the first half in Sarasota, was beaten by strikes from Lincoln Dos Santos and Evander Ferreira after Layton Ndukwu had given the Young Lions 45th-minute lead.

After Trent Arnold was shown the red card for two bookable offences, England poured forward in search of an equaliser, with Woolston vacating his goal and heading upfield for a corner.

And John Peacock's side were rewarded in the dying moments when, following the corner, Liverpool's Adam Phillips curled home a beauty to rescue a point after Daniel Wright had knocked the ball back to him.

Woolston and his teammates will now face Australia on Tuesday in their final game of the tournament, hoping to pick up their first victory after defeat to the USA last week and the weekend's draw with the Selecao.
