A Week Of Wins For Perez

Ayoze Perez hailed an "incredible" week in his fledgling career, after firing United to victory against Liverpool

Ayoze Perez hailed an "incredible" week in his fledgling career, after firing Newcastle United to victory against Liverpool on Saturday.

The young Spanish striker stepped off the substitutes' bench at half-time to net the only goal of the game at St. James' Park, and make it four successive wins for the Magpies.

It capped a remarkable seven days for Perez, who headed United's winner at Tottenham last Sunday before picking up two trophies at the Liga de Futbol Profesional's annual awards night in Madrid in midweek.

And the modest 21-year-old was just happy to play his part in helping Newcastle continue their recent turnaround in fortunes.

"I couldn't have asked for more," Perez told nufc.co.uk, of his recent achievements.

This week has just been incredible for me on a personal level. But the most important thing is that the team is in a very good shape.

"If I can contribute to that, then brilliant, and I hope it continues for a long time."

Perez pounced on a loose ball in the area midway through the second period, following great work down the left by Paul Dummett and Moussa Sissoko, to slam the ball past Simon Mignolet at the Gallowgate End.

And he revealed that hearing a packed St. James' Park roaring was a truly special moment.

"It was a very difficult match because Liverpool are a good team who try to impose themselves on the game. But in the end we managed to get on the ball a bit more and scored a goal.

"Moussa and Paul (Dummett) exchanged the ball and then I just found myself in the right place to score.

"It was definitely instinct. As a forward, you are always waiting for that sort of opportunity. You have to be clever and intelligent, and when I saw the ball coming in I took a chance where it would go. Thankfully I got it right and was able to score.

"It was a huge moment for me. When the ball hit the back of the net, the noise was something else. To have 50,000 people cheering your goal was a special moment.

"We tried to get a second but thankfully we didn't need it in the end. We are all very happy at getting three very important points. That is our fourth victory in a row and I hope we will keep this run going."
