Andre Marriner will referee United's Barclays Premier League home fixture against Liverpool on Saturday

By Anthony Marshall - Newcastle United Managing Editor

Andre Marriner will referee Newcastle United's Barclays Premier League home fixture against Liverpool on Saturday (12.45pm kick-off).

It is the first time this season the West Midlands-based official has taken charge of a Magpies' match this season.

In total this term, Marriner has overseen eight fixtures across the Premier League, Champions League, Capital One Cup, Championship and League One, issuing 29 yellow cards and one red.

The 43-year-old began refereeing in 1992 when he was asked to stand-in for an official who did not turn up at a local league match, and he progressed through the ranks to become a Football League referee 11 years later.

Marriner's first Premier League appointment came in November 2004 with a 4-0 victory for Charlton Athletic over Norwich City, and he took charge of the 2013 FA Cup final between Manchester City and Wigan at Wembley.

On Saturday at St. James' Park, Marriner will be assisted by Darren Cann and Andy Garratt, with Lee Mason the game's fourth official.
