Two second-half goals in as many minutes gave Italy's under-18s a 2-0 victory over their English counterparts in Caorle on Wednesday.
But it was still a proud day for Newcastle goalkeeper Freddie Woodman, who was named captain of the Young Lions.
The 17-year-old shot-stopper played for all but the final few seconds, when he Shrewsbury Town keeper Harry Lewis was handed an international debut, but had little to do in a first half which England shaded.
However he was beaten in the 56th minute when substitute Simone Edora raced through and curled the ball beyond Woodman and into the top corner.
And Simone Minelli's finish from inside the box doubled Italy's advantage soon afterwards before Woodman made a good save to deny the Fiorentina youngster a second goal.
